BOOK 1 Post 1: Aftershocks
The book I’m reading is Aftershocks by Nadia Owusu. Before I chose this book, my friend and I were talking about the question, “where are you from?” We were talking about how sometimes there's not one definite answer if you come from different places and cultures. When I read the blurb, I realized that Nadia also didn't knowing where she was from. I chose this book is because it talks about how moving around a lot could impact someone's identity. I want to understand better the psychology of place. How different places can impact how some move through the world. I also want to understand how the loss of Nadia's affected harmed her youth and adulthood.
I learned that situations that occurred in childhood show back up in adulthood if not dealt with properly. I also learned that we live in a society where 'belonging' is important. But, not belonging to one place should be normal, especially in our increasingly global world. I love the way Nadia writes. Although it’s not organized by time, she organizes it by content in her life. This makes it flow better because we understand her thoughts and the cause and effect of the events that occur. She doesn’t use plain English all the time. I’ve had to google what many words mean. But she does a beautiful job explaining where she is at mentally and how she feels.
